Objective: to investigate women's perspectives on carrying out and accessing the cytopathological examination in a Family Health Strategy in a municipality in the north of Minas Gerais. Method: this is a descriptive, qualitative study carried out with 12 women aged between 25 and 58 years. Data were collected between August and September 2023 from a semi-structured interview and analyzed using Thematic Analysis. Results: they indicated that women undergo cytopathological examination annually and their motivation is to prevent diseases, such as cervical cancer, in order to allow themselves to have early treatment. Difficulties in carrying out the preventive examination included shame and fear regarding carrying out the procedure with a male professional and scheduling a gynecological consultation to carry out the procedure. Despite the difficulties, women recognize the importance of the exam and the need to explain the exam before taking it to make the woman feel calmer and safer. They indicated that carrying out educational activities in addition to the Health Unit can improve adherence to the exam. Conclusion: it is important that the work of professionals is not restricted to the Health Unit, but also in communities and other spaces frequented by women, carrying out educational activities as a way of motivating them to carry out the exam and the need to reorganize the team work processes to reduce the difficulty of scheduling the exam.
