Abstract

Objective: to investigate the challenges faced by mothers in practicing exclusive breastfeeding until the child is six months old within a Family Health Strategy unit in a municipality in northern Minas Gerais. Method: this is a descriptive, qualitative study conducted with 15 women aged between 23 and 42 years, whose children were between six months and two years old. Data were collected between August and September 2025 through semi-structured interviews and subjected to Thematic Analysis. Results: the beginning of breastfeeding is marked by physical challenges, such as pain and nipple fissures, and structural obstacles, including neonatal hospitalizations and early separation between mother and child. Maternal persistence in breastfeeding is facilitated by a support network comprised of healthcare professionals and family members. Professional support, including individual guidance and collective educational initiatives, was essential to strengthening the self-confidence and autonomy of the women. In addition, family support and the exchange of experiences in collective spaces mitigate insecurities and promote exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusion: the success of exclusive breastfeeding is a phenomenon conditioned by the existence of an integrated support network that neutralizes the impacts of physical difficulties and structural obstacles inherent in the postpartum period. Maternal persistence in breastfeeding is sustained by the balance between the technical competence of health professionals and the emotional and practical support offered by family and peer groups.
