Abstract

Objective: this study investigated the incidence of signs and symptoms of TMD in music students. Methods: this was a cross-sectional observational study of a descriptive and quantitative nature under CAAE number 90844418.1.0000.5049 and was carried out with music students at the Alberto Nepomuceno Conservatory of Music from August to December 2018. The participants answered two questionnaires: Fonseca's anamnesis questionnaire and a questionnaire produced by the researchers. The statistical data was tabulated and analyzed using SPSS software version 20.0. Results: forty-three individuals aged between 18 and 54 participated in the study. The incidence of TMD ranging from mild to severe among the participants was 72%. Among the participants, piano students (25.5%) were predominant, followed by guitar students (23.2%). When asked about aspects of anxiety, 60.4% of the students reported that they “sometimes” or “yes” consider themselves anxious. Conclusion: music students may be prone to triggering signs and symptoms of TMD.
