Mendelson syndrome is a rare and potentially serious condition that occurs during the peripartum period, associated with the administration of anesthesia. OBJECTIVE: To address the fundamental aspects related to the syndrome, providing an insight into pathogenesis, risk factors, characteristic symptoms, forms of prevention and treatment. METHODS: Integrative review via PubMed of articles published from 2013 to 2023, using the descriptors "Anesthesia", "Obstetric Labor Complications", "aspiration pneumonia" and the Boolean expression "AND". RESULTS: 15 articles met the inclusion criteria, focusing on characteristics of the syndrome, direct relationship with women’s health and consequences of late diagnosis for the patient. CONCLUSIONS: We note the importance of implementing evidence-based clinical protocols, together with awareness among health professionals about the syndrome, allowing a preventive approach during obstetric care.
Keywords: Aspiration pneumonia. Complications of labor. Anesthesia.
