Abstract

Objective: The present study aims to synthesize the scientific evidence in national and international literature on the role of nurses in raising family awareness about organ and tissue donation after the diagnosis of brain death. Methods: To achieve this purpose, an integrative literature review type of research was carried out, based on a survey of articles available in full, published in the last ten years, in Portuguese, English and Spanish through the Virtual Health Library. Results : 7 articles were selected in which three categories emerged, which are the actions carried out by nurses when working with the potential donor, their role in assisting the family during the interview and the grieving process, in addition to the importance of raising awareness of the family on the topic. Final considerations: It is concluded that assertive communication and nurse sensitivity are fundamental to the effectiveness of organ and tissue donation. For this reason, these professionals need to seek training and scientific basis to carry out the necessary family care, guaranteeing quality, humane and resolute assistance.
